Taking a tree down doesn't automatically take the stump with it. Grinding finishes the job, cutting everything down well below the surface so you can put the space to whatever use you'd like.
Typically four to six inches under grade, which leaves enough room to lay new sod or plant something shallow-rooted directly over the spot.
It generally does - a wide, well-established root flare takes longer to grind through than a stump from a tree that came down recently.
Just the footprint of the stump and the ground right around it - we rake the grindings level and that spot fills back in with grass in a season or so once it's seeded.
