Instead of removing an entire tree over one weak point, cabling reinforces just that spot - hardware set high enough in the crown to keep a vulnerable limb or fork from moving too far in a storm.
When everything apart from that one spot checks out fine, and the risk is contained - a codominant leader splitting at a bad angle, or a limb that's grown out further than its attachment can really support - rather than rot working through the main stem.
